Ukraine elected to IAEA Board of Governors

On September 28, 2023, at the session of the IAEA General Conference, Ukraine was elected to the Agency’s Board of Governors.

79 member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency voted in favor of this decision.

"We are grateful to all the countries that endorsed the decision on Ukraine's membership in the IAEA Board of Governors. russia's war against Ukraine and the enemy's occupation of our largest nuclear power plant challenged both the possibility of ensuring nuclear and radiation safety, as well as the development of the nuclear industry in general. After all, any incident at the nuclear power plant will nullify all civilizational developments regarding the peaceful atom. The international community must return to the 7 indispensable pillars of nuclear safety and security. I hope that through joint efforts we will be able to achieve this – to force the russians to stop the nuclear blackmail of the whole world", Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko said.

Energoatom welcomes this decision and thanks everyone who participated in all stages of preparation until its adoption. "On behalf of the Company, I would like to thank our Ukrainian diplomats for this great cause, who did their utmost to make this decision," President of SE "NNEGC "Energoatom" Petro Kotin emphasized, who participated in the 67th session of the General IAEA conference as part of the Ukrainian delegation chaired by Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko.

Previously, Ukraine was already elected to the IAEA Board of Governors of the IAEA four times. The last time our state was a member of the executive body of the Agency was in 2009-2011.

This year, Armenia was elected to the IAEA Board of Governors as well.

As a reminder, the Board of Governors is one of the two policy-making bodies of the IAEA. It examines and makes recommendations to the General Conference on the IAEA's financial statements, programme and budget.

Furthermore, the Board of Governors considers applications for membership, approves safeguards agreements and the publication of the IAEA's safety standards. It also appoints the Director General of the IAEA, with the approval of the General Conference.
