Ukrainian delegation held a meeting with IAEA representatives regarding nuclear safety

Within the framework of the 67th session of the IAEA General Conference, a meeting "Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards in Ukraine: Nuclear and Radiological Risks and Threats, Regulatory Challenges and Lessons Learned and the Implementation of the Safeguard Agreement between Ukraine and the IAEA" organized by Ukraine was also held.

Energoatom’s President Petro Kotin told the representatives of the Agency about the challenges that Ukraine has faced since the beginning of the full-fledged invasion of russia.

Petro Kotin stressed that Ukrainian NPPs and related energy infrastructure are under constant threat of missile attacks, while russia often shells specific sections of the power grid to cause emergency shutdowns of nuclear plants.

"The most difficult situation remains at the ZNPP still occupied by the russian military and rosatom. This is without exaggeration the biggest threat to nuclear and radiation safety for the whole world after the accidents at the Chornobyl NPP and the Fukushima NPP," Petro Kotin said.

Energoatom CEO added that rosatom, rosenergoatom and rostechnadzor are direct participants of the russian occupation forces and should bear responsibility on a par with the russian military.

Lastly, Petro Kotin emphasized that, in accordance with domestic and Ukrainian norms and rules, the ZNPP should return to full control of Ukraine, the Ukrainian operator – Energoatom, and the regulator.

Moreover, he urged to resolutely act as a united front and make all possible efforts to liberate the power plant from the russian occupation.
