Westinghouse will be involved in the completion of Units 3 and 4 at the Khmelnytsky NPP

During a working visit to the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant, the head of JSC «NNEGC «Energoatom» Petro Kotin, and Chief Executive Officer of Westinghouse Electric Company Patrick Fragman reviewed the progress of restoration works at Units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnytsky NPP.

The head of NNEGC emphasized that the builders were working according to the schedule, and Unit 3 would be ready for equipment installation as early as June in the same year.

«The draft law on the completion of power units has already been submitted to the Parliament. As soon as it is accepted, the next day after that we start equipment installation,» Petro Kotin said.

He also added that two years of full-scale invasion had demonstrated that nuclear power industry was not just necessary, and it was the very basis on which the Ukrainian economy and stability actually stood.

«Ukraine has considerable experience in the use of nuclear energy. We have 15 power units, we produce 55% of the total electricity consumption in Ukraine, we have a large number of outstanding specialists in the teams of nuclear specialists, we had to eliminate all the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl NPP, the russian RBMK design. We fully understand what is necessary to do and how to operate nuclear power units to ensure their safe operation. No other country in Europe has such an experience. I would like to thank Westinghouse for their support and assistance in the completion of Units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnytsky NPP,» the head of NNEGC said.

In his turn, Chief Executive Officer of Westinghouse announced that the American company was carrying out a number of works that would enhance the operational safety of power units.

«We have already carried out a certain number of investigations for the operating power units, and for those under construction, KhNPP-3, KhNPP-4, which complement Energoatom's know-how. Westinghouse supports the efforts of NNEGC in those areas where our experience and expertise can be particularly useful for Ukraine. Of course, this is not the same role as we have for Units 5 and 6, where we are technology developers, but I can definitely say: in certain aspects, we provide assistance to Energoatom,» Patrick Fragman said.

He also added that Energoatom was doing a fantastic job of ensuring the stability of Ukraine's energy system so that the country could continue to operate. We remind you that on April 3, 2024, the draft law on the placement, design and construction of Units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant was registered in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (registration No. 11146 dated April 3, 2024).
