The International conference on recovery of nuclear and radiation safety of Zaporizhzhia NPP will be held in January 2023 in Warsaw

SE «NNEGC «Energoatom» has started preparations for the International conference «Zaporizhzhia NPP: Nuclear Safety Recovery Plan», which will take place on January 17, 2023 in Warsaw.

The main goal of the conference is to discuss problems, risks and unprecedented challenges for the global security due to the situation at the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which has developed as a result of:

  • the forcible seizure of Europe's largest nuclear power plant and thousands of tons of nuclear material placed there by the russian military;
  • the using of this factor as a tool of intimidation and nuclear blackmail of Ukraine and the whole world;
  • violation of all current international norms and rules for ensuring nuclear and radiation safety during the seizure and further operation of the ZNPP as a russian military base and an object of armed hostilities with a significant number of soldiers, weapons, equipment and ammunition.

The conference will also consider proposals for improving international mechanisms for the protection of civilian nuclear facilities, strengthening the role, influence and response measures of the world community and international organizations in cases of forcible seizure of such facilities as well as violation of nuclear and radiation safety and oversight of radioactive materials.

The Nuclear Safety Recovery Plan at the Zaporizhzhya NPP is expected to be discussed during the conference and adopted according to its outcomes, which will enable to return the plant to normal safe operation under international norms and rules.
