More than 200 participants of the International Conference “Nuclear Energy Opportunities for Country’s Development: Wartime and Postwar Reconstruction”, organized by Energoatom on October 15 in Kyiv, agreed that opinion.
Head of NNEGC Petro Kotin, members of Parliament of Ukraine Andriy Gerus, Sergiy Nagornyak and Viktoriya Hryb spoke at the conference.
Petro Kotin emphasized that contemporary nuclear power industry of Ukraine was the basis of the economy of Ukraine.
“It is nuclear power industry that provides Ukrainians with electricity and heat, despite the difficult conditions in which you and I are due to the military aggression of the russian federation,” Head of Energoatom said.
His statement is that the Ukrainian nuclear power industry ranks second in Europe in terms of installed capacity after EDF, the largest operator of nuclear power plants in Europe. For us, EDF is an example of a modern, developed organization of the nuclear industry management infrastructure. That is where the development of our Company is going.
Members of Parliament of Ukraine and Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Housing and Communal Services, Member of Parliament of Ukraine Andriy Gerus stressed the revival of nuclear energy in the world.
“Really today, both in Ukraine and in the world, there are obvious trends – where there is nuclear generation, historically and traditionally, electricity is cheaper than where, for example, basic generation – coal or gas,” Andriy Gerus said.
In his turn, member of Parliament of Ukraine Sergiy Nagornyak emphasized the need to build new nuclear facilities.
“I believe that the plans set by Energoatom - to have additional nuclear power units by 2050 - can be fulfilled. After the war and our victory, we will be able to provide not only Ukraine with ecologically clean nuclear energy, but also to export it to Europe,” Sergiy Nagornyak said.
People's elected representative Viktoria Hryb stressed the experience of Ukrainian nuclear employees, who have been operating NPPs without accidents for decades.
“I am glad that Energoatom pays great attention to our specialists and their expertise. Many real professionals of the Zaporizhzhia NPP were forced to leave the plant captured by the russians and move to the territory controlled by Ukraine. Now they work at other NPPs. This is our future, which will also help us educate the youth. This will be our competitive advantage. Without clean and cheap nuclear energy, our country will not be a serious player on international markets,” Viktoria Hryb said.
Therefore, the participants of the conference concluded that only nuclear energy would provide an opportunity to ensure energy security and development of Ukraine.
