Drawdown of water level in Kakhovka Reservoir is a new threat to Zaporizhzhya NPP

Due to hostilities, the uncontrolled discharge of water at the temporarily occupied Kakhovka HPP leads to a rapid drawdown of water level in the Kakhovka reservoir and threatens the safe operation of the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP.

«Currently, the water level in the reservoir is 13.8 meters against the normal value of 16 meters, which is necessary for the plant to receive power for turbine capacitors and safety systems,» Energoatom CEO Petro Kotin stated. Adding that during the previous days the level dropped even more – to 13.7 m and even 13.6 m, he emphasized: such a drawdown of water level in the Kakhovka reservoir is a new threat for the ZNPP posed by the occupationists.

The President of Energoatom explained that currently the cooling pond is sufficiently filled and for now, there is enough water for the ZNPP needs. However, in case of a worsening situation and a further drawdown of water level, it is going to be a major challenge for the power plant. Moreover, he warned: «The level of 12.8 m will be alert, while 12 m – critical.»

«Hopefully, the IAEA mission present there will have the upper hand and prevent a critical situation,» Petro Kotin said.
