That was announced by Petro Kotin, Acting CEO of JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom”, during his working trip to the SUNPP on May 7, 2024.
According to him, two new power units 4 and 5, using Westinghouse AP1000 technology, will be built at the South Ukraine NPP, where three power units with a total capacity of 3,000 MW are currently in operation.
“We are starting preparations for the construction of two new power units at the PNPP site. Taking into account Ukraine's urgent needs for modern reliable generation and a long construction cycle, we should start this process today, we should carry out engineering research and preliminary design works, make the required calculations, etc. Let me remind you that according to the Energy Strategy of Ukraine by 2050, we need to have 24 GW of nuclear power,” Petro Kotin emphasized.
The specified preparatory works and all expenses for the construction of new nuclear power units are carried out at the expense of Energoatom. Funds from the state and local budgets, as well as funds or equipment directed to the restoration of the national energy infrastructure, which suffered as a result of russian shelling, are not used by Energoatom.
We will remind you that Energoatom and Westinghouse agreed on the construction of nine new power units using AP1000 technology in Ukraine. In April 2024, the first concrete cube of the infrastructure of power unit 5 was laid at the Khmelnitsky NPP.
