International community should get rid of dependence on russia and impose sanctions on rosatom

Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko and President of SE «NNEGC «Energoatom» Petro Kotin took part in a special panel The Cipher Brief Economic and Security Forum, where, among other things, issues of energy security and independence of Ukraine were discussed.

Herman Halushchenko emphasized the need to impose sanctions against rosatom. After all, currently, there are restrictions on oil, gas and russian coal, while the nuclear industry of the aggressor country remains outside the attention of international partners.

According to Minister of Energy, russia still has a monopoly in the nuclear industry and thus holds entire companies and countries «hostage». Therefore, at present, the international community should firmly declare the imposition of sanctions against rosatom in order to get rid of russian dependence forever.

Petro Kotin told the audience about the deepening of cooperation with international partners – NuScale, Holtec and Westinghouse. Energoatom signed several agreements with leading Western companies on the deployment of small modular reactors in Ukraine.

Another significant achievement of the domestic nuclear industry was the complete rejection of russian nuclear fuel, which is an unprecedented example for European countries in replacing the supply of fuel assemblies from the russian federation.

Furthermore, Energoatom CEO emphasized the need to liberate the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant as soon as possible. After all, the de-occupation of the ZNPP will not only guarantee Ukrainian energy security but will also provide an opportunity to finally ensure the safe operation of the largest nuclear facility in Europe in compliance with all IAEA nuclear and radiation safety principles.
