Construction of Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility

In 2021, Energoatom, in cooperation with the U.S. company Holtec, completed the construction of the Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility located in the Chornobyl zone and obtained all the necessary licenses and permits for the operation of this facility.

This made it possible to completely abandon the export of spent nuclear fuel to russia and, as a result, to save up to USD 200 M annually.

The first deliveries of spent nuclear fuel from three Ukrainian nuclear power plants – South Ukraine, Khmelnytskyy and Rivne – will take place as early as 2022.

The spent nuclear fuel is stored at the CSFSF using Holtec International "dry" storage technology. This technology has been licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US NRC), has all the necessary engineering solutions to ensure nuclear and radiation safety while transporting and storing spent fuel, and has been tested in the USA, Spain, Great Britain and other countries.
